What is the Correct Minimum Wage for Tipped Employees?Federal mandates that tipped employees make at least $7.25 per hour.  However, an employer may count the tips an employee receives and pay tipped employees as low as $2.13 per hour.  The difference is known at the "tip credit." 
In order for an employer to pay tipped employees $2.13 per hour, and employer must follow all the requirements.  If the employer does not follow these requirements, the employer must go back and pay the employee $7.25 for every hour worked, plus penalties.  This adds up fast.
